On July 13, 2019, Yayasan Alumni IU Indonesia (YAIUI) held a Career Talk event with the topic of “Doing Business in Indonesia- a Legal Perspective”. Career Talk is our annual event, whereby successful Alum talks and shares wealth of knowledge and experience with other Alumni and current IU students from Indonesia.
This time, we experienced the generosity of Ari Armand, who not only shared his knowledge and experience, but also gracefully hosted us in his artfully decorated office space at Generali Tower Penthouse in Epicentrum, Kuningan. The view from the office was breathtaking, not only providing Jakarta skyline in the background, but also beautiful views of Sumantri Stadium, providing us with a self-reminder to balance between working hard and healthy self-being.
Arie Armand is currently the Managing Partner of AYMP, a law firm focusing in business and corporate legal advisory. He was graduated from Maurer Law School, Indiana University in 2005.
During this event, Arie shared the essential frameworks of corporate law and regulations in Indonesia. One interesting aspect of his presentation was how he pictured a company as a living entity and explained all related arrays of law and regulations during each stage of its life - birth, growth, decline, and death -which philosophically paired with comparable phases in a life of a company: founding, capital raising, restructuring and bankruptcy.
Aside from theoretical presentation, we also had the opportunity to listen from past cases he dealt with and gained insights from them. It was interesting when he shared a case when he faced another Maurer School Alum across the table, displaying how friendship and professionalism could work side-by-side.
We were also given the opportunity to briefly consult various legal issues that attending Alumni is currently having and discussed about it in the forum. Attendees of the event carried diverse background, from professional Alums, entrepreneurs Alum to current student, resulting in wide arrays of interesting questions.
At the end of the event, we shared a simple lunch meal, and experienced yet another sharing by Ivan Toha and Ade Hastuti, IU Class of 2012, who generously provided us with a delicious cold dessert, the Miwaku mochi ice cream. The event turned out not just as another typical classroom event, but such an opportunity for Alum and student to gather and network.
YAIUI would like to once again give highest appreciation to Arie Armand, Maurer School Class of 2005 for hosting us to such a wonderful event, and to Ivan Toha and Ade Hastuti for their deliciously crafted Miwaku mochi ice cream!
